Cruise Loyalty Programmes Compared: Which Line Rewards You Most?

By CruiseControl Team ·

If you cruise more than once (and most people do), a loyalty programme can save you hundreds of pounds over time. Every major cruise line rewards repeat guests with perks ranging from free drinks and Wi-Fi to complimentary cabin upgrades and even free cruises. The programmes vary wildly in structure and generosity, though, so this guide compares them all to help you decide where to concentrate your loyalty.

How Cruise Loyalty Programmes Work

The basic idea is straightforward: sail with a cruise line, earn points or credits, and unlock more generous perks as you move up the tier structure. Points are typically earned based on:

  • Nights sailed. The most common method. Each night onboard earns one credit or point. Suite guests often earn double.
  • Cruises completed. Some lines count the number of separate voyages rather than total nights.
  • Spending. A few lines factor in how much you spend onboard.

Most programmes have between three and six tiers. The entry level is activated after your first sailing, and the top tier requires anywhere from 200 to 700 plus nights at sea. The perks improve dramatically as you climb. Early tiers might offer a welcome-back gift, while top tiers can include unlimited internet, free laundry, priority tendering and complimentary cruises.

Best Loyalty Programme for Beginners

If you are new to cruising and want to start accumulating loyalty perks quickly, these are your best options.

MSC Voyagers Club

MSC's programme stands out for two reasons. First, you enter the programme after just one cruise, and benefits kick in immediately for your second sailing. Second, and this is the big one, MSC offers the most generous status-matching programme in the industry. If you hold loyalty status with any other cruise line, hotel chain or airline, MSC will match you to an equivalent tier in the Voyagers Club. That means you can walk on board your first MSC cruise with Gold or Diamond status and enjoy perks like priority embarkation, onboard discounts and even free cabin upgrades.

Visit the MSC Voyagers Club page for full tier details.

Norwegian Latitudes Rewards

NCL's programme is based on cruises completed rather than nights sailed, which means you earn credit faster on shorter sailings. After just one cruise you reach Silver tier, which includes a 10% discount on future bookings and priority check-in. The programme rewards frequency over duration, making it ideal for cruisers who prefer shorter, more frequent voyages.

Best Loyalty Programme for Frequent Cruisers

Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Society

If you plan to cruise regularly for years, the Crown & Anchor Society offers the most impressive top-tier rewards. Diamond Plus members (175+ points) receive free drinks, complimentary internet and access to the exclusive Diamond Lounge on most ships. Pinnacle members (700+ points) receive an annual complimentary cruise, a Pinnacle-exclusive bar and the sort of VIP treatment that makes you feel like a genuine guest of honour.

The programme also offers flexibility: from 2026, the Points Choice system allows you to allocate your earned points to Crown & Anchor, Celebrity's Captain's Club, or the Venetian Society. That is useful if you sail with Royal Caribbean Group lines interchangeably.

Celebrity Captain's Club

Celebrity's programme mirrors Royal Caribbean's structure (both are owned by the same parent company) but with a more refined, premium flavour. Top-tier Zenith members receive complimentary speciality dining, premium internet, and a dedicated concierge. If you prefer Celebrity's more upscale atmosphere but want the Royal Caribbean Group earning ecosystem, Captain's Club is the answer.

Status Matching: How to Jump Ahead

Status matching is the practice of one cruise line recognising your loyalty tier from another line and granting you equivalent status. It is a powerful way to fast-track your perks, and some lines do it far more readily than others.

Lines that actively offer status matching

  • MSC Cruises. The most generous matcher. MSC recognises status from over 70 brands, including cruise lines, hotel chains and airlines. The match is permanent, not trial-based.
  • Virgin Voyages. Has periodically offered status-match promotions for specific competitor tiers.

Lines that offer limited or no matching

  • Royal Caribbean. Does not formally match status, though Diamond+ members of competitor programmes have occasionally received one-time perks.
  • P&O Cruises. No published status-matching programme.
  • Cunard. No published status-matching programme.
  • Disney. No status matching.

How to request a status match: contact the cruise line's loyalty department before your sailing, providing proof of your status with the competitor programme (a screenshot of your loyalty account or membership card is usually sufficient). MSC allows you to apply online through their website.

Tips for Earning Loyalty Points Faster

  1. Book suites when possible. Many programmes award double points for suite stays. Even if you only upgrade occasionally, this can speed up your progress.
  2. Choose longer itineraries. If your programme is based on nights sailed, a 14-night cruise earns twice as much as a 7-night one, even though the cost is rarely double.
  3. Stack back-to-back cruises. Booking consecutive sailings (departing the day one cruise ends) is a favourite strategy among frequent cruisers. You earn points continuously without the cost of flights home between trips.
  4. Sail during promotions. Some lines offer bonus points during specific promotional periods. Royal Caribbean has offered double cruise points on select sailings.
  5. Travel with a partner. On some lines, both guests in a cabin earn individual points. That means you and a partner both progress through the tiers at the same rate.
  6. Focus your loyalty. The single most important tip. Spreading your cruises across five different lines means you never reach the rewarding upper tiers on any of them. Pick a primary line and stay loyal.

Is Loyalty Worth It?

Yes, but only if you concentrate your cruising with one or two lines. The early tiers are easy to reach and offer modest perks like a welcome-back gift and priority check-in. The mid tiers, typically reached after 3 to 5 cruises, unlock genuinely valuable benefits like free drinks, internet and cabin upgrades. The top tiers require serious commitment, but they deliver a level of recognition and complimentary extras that can save hundreds of pounds per cruise.

The trick is to start intentionally. Choose a line that suits your style, sign up for the loyalty programme before your first cruise, and let the benefits compound over time. If you hold status with another programme, check whether your preferred line offers a status match to give you a head start.
