Mediterranean vs Caribbean: Which Cruise is Right for You?

For UK cruisers, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are the two great default options. They are both fantastic, but they offer very different holidays. The choice usually comes down to what you actually want from the week: beaches and rum, or cathedrals and pasta.

Mediterranean Cruises: Culture and History

Mediterranean itineraries are port-heavy and cultural. Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Venice, Naples and the French Riviera each give you a packed day ashore with museums, ruins and proper food. The peak season runs May to September, with shoulder months in April and October offering thinner crowds and slightly lower prices. From Southampton you can sail straight there, or fly to Barcelona or Civitavecchia for a 7 to 10 night Med loop.

Caribbean Cruises: Sun, Sea and Relaxation

The Caribbean is built for relaxing rather than sightseeing. Beach days, snorkelling, rum punches and easy ports like Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands and Mexico's Caribbean coast. The weather is reliably warm year-round, with hurricane season running June to November. Modern lines route around storms when needed, but it is worth booking outside that window if you can.

Cost and Value

From the UK, Mediterranean cruises win on travel cost. You can sail directly from Southampton, or take a cheap European flight. The Caribbean almost always means a transatlantic flight to Florida or San Juan on top of the cruise fare, which adds several hundred pounds per person before you even board.

Final Recommendation

Pick the Mediterranean if you want to see things, eat well and come home with photos of cathedrals. Pick the Caribbean if you want to switch your brain off and feel sun on your face for a week. Plenty of cruisers eventually do both, in different years.
