Itinerary
- We depart from Durban at 6am and head north to the battlefields where major battles were fought in 1979 between the British and the Zulu. We start of at the Battle of Isandlwane where a local guide will go through the whole history of this war. The Battle of Isandlwana, during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, has been the subject of conjecture and controversy for 140 years. It is arguably the greatest defeat that the British Empire was ever to suffer in her entire colonial history; in two short hours a modern British army was destroyed. We see the exact spot where this war took place. We also visit the museum where this war is commemorated. We visit some of the graves and monuments. (6h 0min) Admission included
- From the Battle of Isandlwane we proceed to the scene where the Rorke's Drift Battle took place. Here we also visit the graves, the full history is narrated by the local guide. We also visit the museum too. The Battle of Rorke’s Drift, fought immediately after the Battle of Isandlwana, is famous throughout the English-speaking world. Here, at a small mission station, 139 British soldiers were attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors. The result was a British victory which saw the award of more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history. The story of Rorke’s Drift is an incredibly tragic story; one of human courage and sacrifice. The unspeakable suffering endured by the warriors and soldiers on such a tiny area is confounding.
