Itinerary
- Visit Nyoirin-ji Temple, famously known as the Frog Shrine. This peaceful Buddhist temple is home to thousands of frog statues of different sizes and expressions, symbolizing good fortune and safe returns. The temple grounds feature traditional wooden structures, stone pathways, and seasonal flowers that create a calm and spiritual atmosphere. It is a unique cultural stop and a popular photo spot, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. (40 min)
- Stop at the entrance area of Mount Yufu, one of Kyushu’s most iconic volcanic mountains. Often called “Bungo Fuji” due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji, the mountain offers stunning natural scenery. Although this is not a full hike, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, fresh mountain air, and take memorable photos of the dramatic twin peaks rising above Yufuin. (30 min)
- Explore Yufuin, a charming hot spring town known for its relaxing countryside vibe and storybook-like streets. The town is filled with boutique shops, dessert cafes, art museums, and local craft stores. Visitors can stroll along Yunotsubo Street, sample regional snacks, and enjoy an optional lunch at their own expense. The peaceful rural scenery and artistic atmosphere make Yufuin one of Japan’s most beloved getaway destinations. (2h 0min)
- Visit Kinrin Lake, a scenic lake famous for its mystical beauty. The lake is partly fed by hot springs, which create a gentle mist over the water during cooler seasons, especially in the early morning. Surrounded by trees and walking paths, the area offers a tranquil setting perfect for photography and relaxation. The reflection of the sky and mountains on the calm water creates a serene and picturesque landscape. (30 min)
- Discover Umi Jigoku, one of Beppu’s most famous “Hells” hot springs. This geothermal attraction features a striking cobalt-blue boiling pond created by natural volcanic activity. Although too hot for bathing, the site includes beautifully landscaped gardens, smaller hot spring pools, and footbath areas. The intense blue color and rising steam create a dramatic and unforgettable visual experience unique to Beppu. (30 min)
- Visit Kamado Jigoku, another highlight of Beppu’s geothermal attractions. Here you will see multiple bubbling hot spring pools in various colors and temperatures. The area is named after the traditional “cooking pot” legend and showcases how locals use geothermal steam to cook food. Visitors can observe the steaming vents and try onsen-steamed eggs or snacks while learning about Beppu’s rich hot spring culture. (40 min)
