Best of Berlin and Sachsenhausen Shore Excursion from Warnemunde
This shore excursion thoughtfully combines our classic All-in-One Best of Berlin experience with a visit to Sachsenhausen, the largest concentration camp near Berlin. You’ll be met right at your cruise ship in Warnemünde or Rostock and travel first to the Sachsenhausen Memorial for a guided introduction to the site. Afterwards, your guide will accompany you to Berlin, where you’ll explore the city’s most important landmarks. Since Sachsenhausen lies on the route from the port to Berlin, visiting it first minimizes extra driving. Please note, however, that this itinerary involves slightly more time on the bus than our standard Berlin shore excursion. Every tour is carefully scheduled to match your ship’s docking times, beginning promptly after arrival and returning well before departure. With nearly a decade of experience, we are proud to have never missed a cruise ship’sdeparture.

Itinerary

  1. Sachsenhausen was the largest concentration camp near Berlin and part of the wider network that became infamous for the crimes of the Nazi regime. This shore excursion combines a meaningful visit to the Sachsenhausen Memorial with the opportunity to experience Berlin’s most significant landmarks, all within the time you have ashore. You’ll be welcomed right at your cruise ship and escorted to a modern, air-conditioned coach. Sit back and relax as your professional driver takes you on a scenic 2.5-hour journey through the charming countryside of former East Germany before arriving at the memorial site. (15 min)
  2. Upon arrival at Sachsenhausen, you will step off the coach and meet your licensed, English-speaking guide. Dedicated and knowledgeable, your guide will accompany you throughout the day, beginning with an in-depth introduction to the memorial site. Over the course of 60–75 minutes, you’ll walk through the grounds where history left such a profound mark, hearing stories that bring to life the experiences of those imprisoned here. The visit is designed to be both educational and deeply moving, giving you time to reflect on the past while understanding the significance of Sachsenhausen in the broader context of World War II. After this important part of the journey, your group will rejoin the bus and continue on to Berlin. Here the tone of the day shifts, as your guide leads you through the vibrant heart of Germany’s capital. You’ll explore many of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks and highlights, gaining insights into the city’s complex history and its modern character. (1h 15min) Admission included
  3. Upon arrival in Berlin, your tour begins with a drive past the magnificent Charlottenburg Palace—a breathtaking Baroque residence from the late 17th century. Built by Prussia’s first king, Frederick I, as a tribute to his beloved wife, Sophie Charlotte, the palace remains one of Berlin’s most stunning landmarks. Its grand architecture and rich history offer the perfect introduction to the city’s royal past before you continue onward to discover more of Berlin’s iconic sights
  4. You will then pass by the Tiergarten, Berlin’s expansive central park. Once a royal hunting ground, today it is a lush green heart of the city—an oasis of tree-lined avenues, lakes, and open spaces that locals and visitors alike enjoy. Driving through this beautiful park offers a refreshing contrast to the surrounding urban landscape and a glimpse of Berliners’ daily life
  5. Next, you’ll pass by the impressive Victory Column, crowned with the golden statue of Victoria, the goddess of victory. Originally erected to commemorate Prussia’s triumphs in the Wars of Unification, the monument has since become one of Berlin’s most striking symbols. Make sure to have your camera ready to catch the sun glinting off Victoria’s wings as your coach circles this iconic landmark.
  6. When you arrive at the striking Reichstag Building, once devastated by fire after Hitler’s rise to power and now restored as a proud symbol of modern German democracy, you’ll step off the coach to continue the tour on foot. Standing before its impressive glass dome and historic façade, your guide will share how this building reflects both the turbulent past and the forward-looking spirit of today’s Germany (10 min)
  7. Next, you’ll walk through the arches of the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s most iconic landmark. Once a royal city gate and later a powerful symbol of division during the Cold War, it now stands as Germany’s foremost monument of unity and peace. As your guide explains its layered history, you’ll discover why the Brandenburg Gate holds such a central place in the nation’s cultural identity (15 min)
  8. From Pariser Platz, the tour continues on foot to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Here, you’ll take time to walk among the field of towering concrete stelae, an evocative space designed to honor the memory of the millions of Jewish lives lost under National Socialism. This powerful and contemplative experience allows for reflection before rejoining your coach to continue the journey through Berlin (15 min)
  9. Next, you’ll arrive at Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Once the frontline of divided Europe—where spies slipped through the shadows and U.S. and Soviet tanks faced each other in a tense standoff in 1961—today it stands as a reminder of the city’s turbulent past. Here, you’ll also take a short lunch break of around 30–45 minutes before continuing your exploration of Berlin. (45 min)
  10. Boarding the bus again, we head next to the former headquarters of the SS and Gestapo—today known as the Topography of Terror—to confront the dark heart of Nazi Germany. Here you’ll also stand before one of the most chilling symbols of the Cold War: the Berlin Wall. This site offers a powerful reminder of how two of history’s most oppressive regimes left their mark on the city, making it one of the most thought-provoking stops of the day (15 min)
  11. Your final stop in Berlin will be the magnificent Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you’ll take time to admire the grand architecture and imperial splendor of its world-famous museums. After this last highlight, you’ll return to your coach, bid farewell to your guide, and begin the journey back to port. Rest assured, all our shore excursions are tailored to match your ship’s exact docking schedule. Each tour begins promptly after your vessel arrives and returns with ample time before departure. With nearly a decade of experience organizing shore excursions, we are proud to say that we have never missed a cruise ship’s departure. (10 min)
