This unique walking tour allows guests to enjoy their experience by learning about the ancient history of Mount Maunganui dating back to the arrival period of our Māori ancestors to current day. A highlight is the ancient pohutukawa tree that was used in tribal rituals. This tree is believed to be one of the oldest in New Zealand. The stories told at the locations are not well-known by many locals, and definitely not by visitors to our community. The stories told are generally from the ancient Māori tribal perspective which leaves guests with a greater understanding of this city. Min of 3 guests for tour to proceed.

Itinerary

  1. Your local guide will tell you the amazing history and stories of the harbour dating back to the 1300s from the time of the arrival of our Māori ancestors.
  2. Your guide will take you along the boardwalk on the shoreline of the Main Beach, one of the most desirable beaches in New Zealand.
  3. From the boardwalk view Moturiki Island, once a terraced fortified village. Your guide will tell you of the history of this significant historical location. (10 min)
  4. Stories of the importance of this mountain to our Māori ancestors (5 min)
  5. Enjoy the quiet oasis that exists at the community garden. Spend some time browsing how locals are finding ways to be sustainable. (20 min)
  6. To end the tour your guide will take you to opposite Coronation Park, 10 minutes walk to the ship. Or, if you choose, you can wander the shops of Mount Maunganui catering for visitors coming to the region. (10 min)
  7. Stand before this symbolic attraction of the partnership of Kiwis with our neighbours from Australia. Your guide will reveal the importance of this partnership. Behind you is a location that is not known by many who live or visit here. Your guide will reveal what that significance is of Hopukiore. (15 min)
