Itinerary

  1. We begin by passing the Auckland Ferry Building, a distinctive 1912 waterfront landmark that overlooks the harbour and marks the heart of the city’s transport and trading history.
  2. Follow Auckland’s iconic coastal road with wide views across the Waitematā Harbour as we make our way toward Mission Bay.
  3. A beautifully landscaped clifftop reserve offering sweeping views across the Waitematā Harbour. Explore the memorial to Michael Joseph Savage and and learn why this is one of Auckland’s most significant viewpoints. (15 min)
  4. Stop to enjoy one of Auckland’s favourite beaches. Feel the sand beneath your toes, admire the pōhutukawa trees along the shoreline, or take a moment to photograph the view across to Rangitoto Island. (15 min)
  5. Once a volcanic crater and now Auckland’s oldest park, with the War Memorial Museum at its centre. We pass the impressive museum building before continuing into the peaceful gardens to visit the historic Winter Gardens.
  6. Explore the heritage glasshouses, including the Tropical House and Cool House, before walking down into the tranquil Fernery tucked into an old quarry beneath the gardens. (30 min)
  7. Take a short walk to the summit for sweeping 360-degree views over Auckland’s skyline, twin harbours, and volcanic landscape. (30 min)
  8. Once a Māori walking track along the ridge and later one of Auckland’s busiest shopping streets. Today, as we drive through, you’ll see a vibrant mix of heritage buildings, street art, LGBTQ plus culture, and the colourful nightlife the road has long been known for.
  9. The heart of Auckland’s CBD, where 19th-century architecture meets busy retail, theatres, and business life. As we drive through, you’ll see how the city has grown from its early colonial beginnings to the modern metropolis it is today.
  10. We pass this 1911 Edwardian Baroque landmark beside Aotea Square, known for its clocktower and beautifully restored concert hall.
  11. Rising 328 metres above the city, it’s hard to miss. We pause here for photos and a brief look at how the tower was built and the part it plays in Auckland’s skyline today. (10 min)
  12. We pass St Patrick’s Cathedral, a Gothic Revival landmark with origins dating back to the 1840s and the centre of Catholic life in Auckland’s CBD.
